Quoting customers, buying materials and moving between sites can leave little time for paperwork. At KC Accountants, we help tradespeople organise their accounts, meet their tax responsibilities and check whether they are due a CIS refund.
Whether you work on building sites, take on private jobs or run a small construction company, we provide personal support suited to your trade
We support:
- Builders, bricklayers and general labourers.
- Electricians, plumbers and heating engineers.
- Carpenters, joiners and kitchen fitters.
- Painters, decorators, plasterers and tilers.
- Roofers, scaffolders and groundworkers.
- CIS subcontractors and construction contractors.
You may find customers through Checkatrade, work through contractors or build your business through recommendations. We welcome sole traders and limited companies, including those combining site work with direct customer jobs.
If contractors deduct tax from your payments under the Construction Industry Scheme, those deductions are payments towards your final tax bill.
Once your full income, allowable business expenses and tax position are reviewed, you may have paid more than you owe.
We check your records, account for the deductions already made and prepare the relevant return or repayment claim. Our focus is on claiming what you are entitled to and explaining the outcome clearly.
A refund is not automatic. Depending on your circumstances, there may instead be further tax to pay.
Tools, materials, vehicle costs and payments to other workers can make your accounts more involved than simply adding up invoices.
We understand that a busy diary does not always mean money is available in the bank. You may pay suppliers before a customer settles an invoice or wait for payment after completing a job.
Our support helps you make sense of the figures behind your work and prepare for the bills ahead.
Attention to your costs and deductions
We review the records you provide, assess relevant expenses and identify missing information that needs resolving.
Support for your working arrangements
Working as a subcontractor, employing staff and paying subcontractors create different accounting needs. We tailor our service to your role.
Clear explanations before submission
We explain your figures and any tax payable or potential refund before asking you to approve your return.
Fees agreed before we start
You know what work is included and what it will cost. Additional services are discussed in advance.
Depending on your needs, we can provide:
With offices in London and Birmingham, we serve tradespeople across both cities and their surrounding communities.
Our remote service is available throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. You can work with our team without taking time away from a job to visit an office.
Tax has already been deducted. Do I still need a return?
CIS deductions do not replace your tax reporting responsibilities. We can review your circumstances and prepare the return you need.
How much could my CIS refund be?
That depends on your income, allowable expenses, deductions and wider tax position. We calculate it from your records rather than promise a refund amount upfront.
I do private jobs as well as CIS work. Can you help?
Yes. We can bring both types of income together when preparing your accounts.
What if I am missing CIS statements?
Contact us with the records you have. We can identify what is missing and explain how to request the information needed.
Can you help if I pay other subcontractors?
Yes. We can review your contractor responsibilities and quote for the relevant CIS services.
How long will a refund take?
HMRC controls repayment times and may carry out checks. We can explain the position, but cannot guarantee a payment date.
From your first subcontracting role to a growing construction business, KC Accountants can help take the accounting work off your hands.
